A birthday is just the first day of another 365-day journey around the sun. Enjoy the trip! (Author Unknown)
Happy birthday to me! Love having birthdays. Don’t count them, but I love having them. My dog buddies never counted them up either. Up top here is a picture from back when I didn’t have to do the math to figure out how old I was and I could probably still count my years on my fingers but I would have had to use both hands. Be a lot of finger flashing if I had to count my years on my fingers now. After I did the math. LOL
But I was a dog lover from an early age, and Ollie was my first dog. He didn’t like strangers or even visitors that weren’t exactly strangers. He spent a lot of time chained when we had visitors and he really didn’t like it when I started dating guys. He tried his best to discourage them coming around, but my husband to be persevered.
My oldest son called me a little ago to tell me Happy Birthday and he asked if I was going to post pictures of myself the way I do of my kids and grandkids when they have birthdays. I hadn’t thought about doing that. But since it’s blogging night, I’ll post a few here. I was going to do grandkids and me, but it’s getting late and I spotted the dog pictures first. Besides, I had so many pictures I loved of the grandkids, I couldn’t decide which to pick.
So Ollie is up top. I had some more dogs in between him and Oscar who is taking a selfie with me in this picture. He was the very best dog. In my book, Love Comes Home, I have Graham missing his old coonhound dog, Poe, and remembering him as the best dog ever. In the book he has another dog, Chaucer, but he’s always saying, “He’s no Poe.” In the book the family picks that up and everything that doesn’t quite measure up starts being “no Poe.” I could say that about Oscar. I’ve had some good dogs, but none quite like Oscar.
After Oscar died of bone cancer at the too young age of seven, I found Frankie at a Humane Shelter. It was love at first sight, but I have to admit he is definitely no Oscar. But he doesn’t care. He has an enthusiasm for life and look out anyone that gets in his way. He loves people, wants to catch wild turkeys and did up moles. He says life is good, but might be better if he could just get it to never thunder or no fireworks or no loud guns. Then, a couple of years ago Marley needed a new home and so we happily took him in. He is the sweetest little dog, but he’s getting old for a dog, going on eleven. In dog years that’s even older than me. But so far he still gamely goes walking with us and he does love his Frankie. He’s also patient when I give him a trim, but thank goodness he never looks in a mirror when I’m finished.
So there are some pictures of me to celebrate my birthday. I’ll dig out those grandkid pictures next time.
