Do you love having birthdays? I do. One a year is enough since they add up pretty quickly even at that one a year rate. But birthdays are to enjoy even as the numbers go up. The thing to do is have them, enjoy them, forget about counting them. Once you hit your twenties, the anticipated ages have all been passed up. There’s 13 and finally a teenager, 16 when you can finally get a driver’s license, 18 when you might be graduating high school, and 21 when you can think you’re a full fledged adult. After those, birthdays are just days to enjoy and feel like the world owes you a happy twenty-four hours. Then, when you get a few more years added on, you can decide not to limit the birthday fun to one day. Why not just celebrate all month or at least the rest of the month once the birthday comes?
What do you do to celebrate? I used to always try to give myself a day off to read a book. Just to sit down and read all day if I wanted. Sometimes I’d make myself a cherry cheesecake. Yum. Don’t like those as much as I used to. Now I like Angel Food Cake and strawberries. Some years I’d go on a long hike down the creek with my dogs. That was always a fun birthday gift to myself.
When Mom was still living and able, she always cooked a birthday dinner for me and for my sisters on or around our birthdays. Later on when she didn’t want to cook big meals any longer, we would go out to a restaurant for our birthdays. Now that Mom is gone, my sisters and I carry on the tradition of celebrating our birthdays with a special day together.
Of course, I’m always happy when I get to see the kids and grandkids. This year, my sweet son and daughter-in-law fixed me a delicious birthday dinner. When I got there, the table was set with my grandmother’s plates that my daughter-in-law got when Mom passed and we divided up all the dishes. Fancy stemmed glasses were ready for tea and lemonade that the grandgirls were making. They are good helpers. I was given the seat at the head of the table in the fanciest chair and got to fill up my plate first. Later they made sure I didn’t do any of the clearing of the table. I was royally waited on as they brought out that favorite dessert of cake and strawberries. I think I could get spoiled fast to all that.
The Caption Game
All the birthday wishes on line were fun too. If you sent me a birthday wish, then thank you very much. It’s good to have so many wonderful reading friends. And I appreciate all of you who played my Caption Game. I hope you had fun. You came up with some great captions for the pictures I posted. I liked the ones you came up with for Frankie and Marley’s picture. Betty’s “I got your back” fit nicely as did all the ones saying how happy Frankie is to have Marley as his buddy. I think he definitely wants us to keep him as Martha said in her caption. I think they will be those “fur-ever friends” Caryl suggested with a play on words. But the game is over for now. We’ll do something else fun soon. I do have a newsletter giveaway going so if you didn’t get the newsletter, just let me know and I’ll shoot you out a copy.
And the Winners Are–
I’ve sent the three winners e-mails. They are Roma, Lavon and Ola. Again thank you all for playing my Caption Game and making it so fun. You’re the best and I so appreciate each and every one of you who reads my posts here and reads my stories too.
So my birthday day is almost over, but I’ve got a couple weeks of my birthday month to go. One of the fun things I’ll get to do in my birthday month is take part in the Heartland Book Festival in Elizabethtown, Kentucky next Saturday, September 21. If you’re in the area, come on by and say hello and enjoy some book fun. I’ll think of some more ways to celebrate as well as doing research for my next novel. Time to get to know my characters and get going on their story. I think my main character is going to be named Tansy.
Thanks for reading.
What do you think would be fun to do to celebrate your birthday?
